Cindy M. Matthews is the director of community outreach for the West Metro Fire Protection District in the Denver metro area. She has more 20 years experience working in public relations, media relations, marketing, event, and communication experience with private, public and nonprofit organizations.
Her experience includes several large-scale disasters and crises, including assisting as a public information officer during the Columbine tragedy and FEMA's Colorado Task Force One during deployments to New York following 9/11 and several hurricanes.
She served as the director of communication for a Colorado municipality, public affairs coordinator for Columbia Colorado Division, and assistant director of public relations and marketing for Humana Inc. In 1993 Matthews served as the assistant director of communication for World Youth Day where she coordinated the media relations efforts for Pope John Paul II, President Clinton, Vice President Gore, and nearly half a million people visits to Denver for the international event.
Matthews is a member of several associations, including the International Association of Business Communicators, Public Relations Society of America, National Association of Government Communicators and Emergency Services Public Information Officers of Colorado.
She has a master's degree in communication with an emphasis in media relations and a bachelor's degree in journalism (broadcast news). She has served as an adjunct faculty member for the University of Colorado at Denver and the University of Denver's University College.
She is the mother of three and lives in Lakewood, Colorado.
