Susan C. Deans is editor and vice president of the Daily Camera in Boulder, Colo. She has held that position since September 2003, directing news and editorial operations of the daily newspaper.
She was an assistant managing editor at the Rocky Mountain News in Denver from April 1999 through August 2003. Her responsibilities at the 350,000-circulation daily included oversight of the weekend newspapers and night supervision of the newsroom.
Prior to joining the News she was editor and vice president of The Sun News, a daily newspaper in Myrtle Beach, S.C., for nine years. She also was managing editor of The Sun News for three years.
She spent 10 years at the Daily Camera early in her career, starting as a reporter covering the University of Colorado, local and state government, and later becoming city editor, then assistant managing editor.
Deans has a master's degree in journalism from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and a bachelor's degree in English from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill. She is a native of Chicago.
Deans has taught journalism at the University of Colorado and Metropolitan State College, Denver, and has worked in advertising and public relations.
She served for three years on the board of directors of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and edited its national magazine, The American Editor; she also served six years on the board of the Associated Press Managing Editors and edited its national magazine, the APME News.
A member of the National Federation of Press Women and Colorado Press Women, Deans has served on the board of the South Carolina Press Association. She is a past president of the Myrtle Beach Rotary Club, past president of the South Carolina AP News Council and past president of the Colorado Associated Press Editors.
She is a graduate of Leadership Boulder County, Leadership South Carolina and Leadership Grand Strand.
